DAY 3

I am exhausted..
But I had a great day!

First me, louise and mum went to Masi so that I could film the morning gathering that they have. They sing and pray, it is really fun to watch. After that the driver (don't remember his name) took us out to Haven in Parkridge, one of the more poor places in East London. We introduced ourselves and got a tour of the center and the daycare. We asked if the kids were gonna sing later and they did!

They all lined up outside and sang a lot of songs, I got it all on tape. Then when they were done I sat on the ground and they came and sat by me. They were all very curious! We sang and after a while some of the girls started to braid my hair, haha.

Louise came out and literally dragged me inside the center. We got to meet a few of the "opa's & oma's" who live at the center. When someone who speaks Afrikaans is of your grandfather/mothers generation you call them opa and oma. In Xhosa you say something else but I don't remember what it was.. All the kids call me "Sizi" which means sister.

We met with Bertha but she had to talk to two girls my age, a case of domestic violence she said. So we waited, and then she came out and told us about the girls.

One of them had a eight month old baby and a boyfriend with no job who hit her. To get money she has to sell sex, because the child grant in SA is only 140R (150SEK). Since she is breastfeading her son could get hiv or aids if she continues selling herself.

The other girl did not have any money and lives on the street with her one-yearold who she wants to put up for adoption. It is so overwhelming because these two girls are really one in a million here in SA..

Afterwards we went to Isaiah, a children's home and school in Parkridge. It was so much nicer than DB. Isaiah are sponsored by Rotary and have been visited by Nelson Mandela (our hero!) DB only have small sponsors so far.
We met with the social workers who asked us to plead to Masi that they should have a workshop about teenage pregnancy and such at their school. Hope they will!!

We went back to Haven. Every wednesday they have a feeding-scheme for the children in the area. They made "samp & beans" which contains of beans, maize and some bones to make it taste better.

There were somewhere between 150-200 children that came with their small plastic buckets and stood in line for som food. Some of the parents stood outside waiting for them to finish, but most of the kids came alone or with a sibling.

We got a quick tour of the informal settlements in Parkridge adn when we came back to the center we were told that one of the sick men had passed away.

Right before we went home we learned that another passed a few minutes after..

I don't really have the strength to write anymore now, I have to go upstairs and film Richard and his band who are practicing. Promised him.. blaah, I WANT TO SLEEP!

Tomorrow i'm getting up at nine to start building my drum with Richard.

I miss all of my loved ones at home already. Probably because it is sooo different here.
Anyways, goodnight!

Ja, det måste vara väldigt tufft att möta så mycket lidande och fattigdom, på en gång.
